What are implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of biocompatible materials, typically titanium, that provide a strong foundation for fixed or removable replacement teeth. They are an effective and long-term solution for people who have lost teeth due to decay, disease, or injury. Here’s a comprehensive overview of dental implants:

Components of a Dental Implant

  1. Implant: The titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone, acting as the root of the replacement tooth.
  2. Abutment: A connector placed on top of the implant to hold and support the replacement tooth or crown.
  3. Crown: The custom-made replacement tooth that is attached to the abutment, designed to match your natural teeth.

Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Natural Look and Feel: Designed to look, feel, and function like your natural teeth.
  • Durability: Implants are very durable and can last many years, often a lifetime with proper care.
  • Bone Preservation: Help preserve jawbone density and prevent bone loss that can occur with missing teeth.
  • Improved Oral Health: Do not require alteration of adjacent teeth, unlike traditional bridges.
  • Convenience: Eliminate the inconvenience of removable dentures.

Procedure for Getting Dental Implants

  1. Initial Consultation: The dentist examines your mouth, takes X-rays, and discusses your treatment options and overall health.
  2. Implant Placement: The implant is surgically placed into the jawbone. This is followed by a healing period of several months, during which the bone grows around the implant in a process called osseointegration.
  3. Abutment Placement: Once the implant is securely integrated with the jawbone, the abutment is attached to the implant.
  4. Crown Placement: After the gums heal around the abutment, a custom-made crown is placed on the abutment, completing the restoration.

Bone Grafting and Other Preparatory Procedures

There are times when Dr. Burden will need to increase the amount of bone in a patient’s jaw so that sufficient bone will be available to support the dental implant. Bone can be lost through periodontal disease or when a tooth is missing.

He uses bone grafting, a safe and very successful procedure, to build up bone on the jaw by adding a small amount of bone from the patient, a donor or synthetic bone. Dr. Burden uses graft material best suited to you. In many cases Dr. Burden can place the bone graft at the same time as the implant(s).

Graphic of the bone, sinus and teeth.

A sinus lift (sometimes called a sinus augmentation), is surgery that adds bone below the sinus, added between your jaw and the maxillary sinuses, which are on either side of your nose. To make room for the bone, the sinus membrane has to be moved upward, or “lifted.”

Care for Dental Implants

  • Oral Hygiene: Brush and floss regularly to maintain the health of the implant and surrounding tissues.
  • Regular Dental Visits: Schedule regular check-ups and cleanings with your dentist to monitor the implant and overall oral health.
  • Avoid Hard Foods: Avoid chewing on hard items that can damage the crown.

Suitability for Dental Implants

  • Healthy Gums: Good gum health is crucial for supporting the implant.
  • Sufficient Jawbone: Adequate bone density and volume are necessary to support the implant. Bone grafting procedures can be considered if bone loss is an issue.
  • Overall Health: Patients should be in good overall health. Certain conditions like uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smoking can affect healing and success rates.

Dental implants provide a reliable and aesthetic solution for tooth loss, helping patients regain confidence and improve their oral function. If you think dental implants might be right for you, schedule a consultation with your dentist to discuss your options and create a personalized treatment plan.
